10 careers for models:
People who pursue modeling typically choose a career path based on their professional interests as well as their physical features. Here are 10 modeling jobs to consider:
1. Fashion modeling
Fashion models work for clothing designers and brands, wearing their garments in photo shoots, runway shows and other events. The companies market the photos and videos of the models to attract attention to specific products and services.
Fashion modeling places an emphasis on physical requirements, such as fitness, complexion and size. Because of its popularity, fashion modeling is a competitive field, but those who find success may earn high salaries.
2. Jewelry modeling
Someone who appreciates jewelry design and enjoys accessorizing might pursue a career as a jewelry model. Like other types of modeling, the specific requirements vary depending on the company and the jewelry. For example, if a company needs models for rings and bracelets, it likely has specific standards for the appearance of the model's hands and arms, so it might prefer models with certain ring sizes and fingernail shapes.
3. Shoe modeling
Shoe models wear sneakers, sandals, high heels and other types of footwear for advertisements. They maintain clean, smooth feet with trimmed nails. While some shoe modeling jobs take little time to complete, others require the model to keep a certain posture or remain standing for long periods of time. As a result, this job can require physical stamina and patience.
4. Hand modeling
Hand models allow companies to use images of their hands to sell products. This type of modeling sometimes overlaps with others, such as jewelry modeling. Hand models have healthy skin and nails. Although some brands are diversifying their models, other companies may still choose hand models who lack certain attributes, such as:
Visible veins
Scarring
Tattoos
Wrinkles
Moles or freckles
5. Eye modeling
Eye models appear in many types of advertisements, including those for eyewear, cosmetics, jewelry and skin care products. Brands may choose eye models based on eye color, size and shape. They usually prefer a symmetrical size and shape and clear, bright eyes. They may also have preferences for features around the eyes and nose.
6. Hair modeling
Hair models work for product manufacturers and renowned hairstylists, demonstrating the results of haircare products and modeling unique colors or styles. Besides maintaining optimal hair health, hair models also follow skincare routines because their faces often appear in their work. These models also have a willingness to try many types of hairstyles and trends depending on the company's or stylist's requests.
7. Runway modeling
Runway modeling is one of the most prestigious careers in the industry, as it often involves working with luxury brands. It involves walking down a runway—a narrow stage platform—to showcase a designer's newest clothing and accessories. Like fashion modeling, runway modeling is highly competitive, but meeting certain standards may help improve your chances of getting a job as a runway model. Some common characteristics of runway models include:
Specific aesthetics that match designers' preferences
Strong work ethic
Ability to walk with confidence and poise
Knowledge of the history of fashion
8. Fit modeling
Fit models, also known as fitting models, work backstage at fashion shows and in designer workspaces. They wear garments so the designer can evaluate the clothing for flaws and make any necessary adjustments before the runway models wear them. While designers expect fit models to meet certain measurements and criteria, fit models typically have less strict requirements to fulfill than runway models.
9. Commercial modeling
Commercial models' primary purpose is selling the products they model. Many types of companies hire commercial models, such as clothing brands, retailers and product manufacturers. Companies choose commercial models based on the aesthetic and tone they desire for their campaign. For example, a men's fragrance company may seek masculine models with a professional appearance to appeal to their target market.
Commercial models may also wear a brand's clothing or makeup, advertise a company, speak about a product or demonstrate how to use a product. Because product sales can take many innovative forms, commercial modeling offers many opportunities.
10. Print or editorial modeling
Print models appear exclusively in print materials such as magazines, newspapers, catalogs and billboards. Many types of models work as print models, so they may also meet the qualifications for hand, shoe, eye or fashion modeling. Print modeling is sometimes more inclusive than other types of modeling because magazines and catalogs often feature individuals with different appearances, ages and abilities. Some print models receive long-term contracts with brands, which allow them to appear in many advertisements for the company.
